March Update

I know, it’s April already….

Pride

Our fundraiser is live! Please take a minute to check it out and consider contributing if you are able. We’ll have more volunteer opportunities announced as Twin Cities Pride gets closer.

As mentioned last month, our booth fees were waived, so all funds raised will go for visibility and information.

We know gofundme is not the best platform for everyone. We’ve got venmo and paypal available as well and will always take cash in person. Get in touch at mnasexuals(at)gmail.com or at a meetup and we’ll figure it out!

Advocacy

We have the opportunity to be interviewed as a group for a feature on the asexual community to be included in the pride issue of Lavender magazine. Check out the meetup event on April 12th for details! There’s directions there for how to join in if you can’t make it as well.

Website

We are looking for volunteers to write about news and updates after our discussions so we can post them on our website. If you are interested, just go ahead and volunteer at the beginning of the discussion. Please know that our discussions are a safe space and we will never publish personal information or details online.

We are also looking for volunteers to work on a new page of our website that would be resources and information for mental health professionals. If you are interested, please let us know!

Upcoming Events

  • Interview for Lavender magazine – April 12th
  • April Discussion – April 20th at Nokomis library
  • Ace Games – April 27th

Statement to Duluth-Superior Pride

Below is the statement submitted by our organization to Duluth-Superior Pride in response to their recent call for a logo design for this year’s pride festival. This call brought awareness to our broader organization of the fact that Duluth-Superior Pride continues to use the A in GLBTAQI2S to stand for allies instead of asexual, aromantic, and agender individuals.

To Duluth Superior Pride:

Some of our members have made Minnesota Asexuals aware of your recent call for a logo design for this years Pride, specifically in relation to the A in GLBTAQI2S being used for Ally instead of Asexual, Aromantic, and/or Agender. While we understand that this is not new for your organization, the realization that Duluth-Superior Pride does not explicitly include asexual, aromantic, or agender individuals was difficult for many people.

The purpose of Minnesota Asexuals is to advocate for the visibility of asexual and aromantic spectrum people. However, in this situation, we felt it would be remiss to exclude agender people from this conversation as well. Many of our members also identify in this way, and not all agender or otherwise non-binary-gendered people feel comfortable identifying under the transgender umbrella.

Using A to represent allies to the exclusion of asexual, aromantic, and agender people further contributes to the marginalization these groups face from society at large. When this exclusion comes from groups that also face this marginalization, it makes us question if spaces we thought were safe truly are.

We recognize that it is extremely difficult to go through the full process to change not only your organization’s bylaws but also the name you go by during the key lead up time for planning this year’s pride festival. However, we request that the use of the word ally be taken under consideration when selecting the logo design.

As we enter pride season, we also hope that this is taken into account when creating other official media as well as statements made at events, especially throughout your pride weekend. We specifically want to mention this in the context of the statements made at the Mayor’s reception, where it is our understanding that GLBTAQI2S is read out in full, rather than used as an acronym.

Furthermore, we appreciate your willingness to discuss updates to your bylaws to make your mission explicitly more inclusive of additional queer identities.

We hope that this statement from our organization is taken into consideration when making your decision regarding the acronym and its definition included in your bylaws.  We do hope to have a presence at your upcoming March meeting, but some of our Duluth-Superior area members are unable to attend.

We would be glad to assist with additional information if needed and look forward to your partnership.

February Update

Happy Aromantic Awareness Week everyone!

We’re starting something new that’s been discussed off and on for a while, but hasn’t really had anything come of it before… a newsletter! The goal is to have one of these monthly with general updates. If you’re interested in writing these in the future, let us know at a meeting!

Pride

  • Twin Cities Pride is June 22-23. St. Cloud Pride is September 21. Rochester Pride is September 28.
  • We have registered for a booth for Twin Cities Pride. It looks like our fee waver was accepted, which means we’ll get the booth for free!
  • Only a few people are interested in marching in the parade so we are not planning on registering for it. If we did have a critical mass of people interested, we would need to figure out how to address the racial implications of marching in a parade that many people of color have boycotted or protested against due to the police presence and discrimination at Pride.
  • We will have a Pride meeting to plan more specifics such as what we want to hand out at our booth (stickers? buttons? pamphlets? business cards?) as we get closer to the event.

Mental Health and Advocacy

  • There is increasing interest and energy around advocating for Ace inclusive healthcare, especially for mental health. Right now our goal is to find other individuals and groups who are already working on LGBTQ issues in mental health and partner with them. For example, can we offer information and resources to groups who do training for mental health providers? Can we send an ace person to be part of a panel discussion? Can we have a table or give a presentation at a conference? If you would like to help research different options or have ideas of groups or events we could partner with, please let us know.
  • Becoming a 501(c)3 non-profit will help us do more advocacy work. We may look at accomplishing this in the next 3 years. For now we will table this issue until after Pride.
